There are a lot of people that have credit card debt management problems right now. Some of it through no fault of their own and others may have a case of consumeritis. Whatever the reason, part of becoming debt free and staying that way will have to do with making changes that will keep you from ever having debt again. I think this biggest part of becoming debt free is mental.
I have watched my share of debt relief television shows and none of the people featured on these shows are living a “bare bones” lifestyle. There is always a lot of eating out, clothing and electronic purchases, personal care expenses and many other things that are not necessities. The more of these things you can reduce or eliminate, the sooner you will be looking a consumer debt balance of zero dollars.
Once you have cut your expenses, look through your home and find things you can sell. Most people that like to make purchases often have a house full of things they are not using and really have no use for. If you can find a way to make extra money each month to pay towards your debt, it will reduce the balances that much more quickly.
It is important to know where your money is going. If you have an issue with credit cards, you would be better off living on cash. It is easier to keep track of just because it is visible. Keeping a record of your spending will help you keep track of where you money is going and can help you identify areas of excess spending. If you are a smoker, you should consider quitting. This is an expensive habit in itself and then when you consider such things as medical expenses, lost work time, higher insurance costs, there is no way you can justify the cost of this habit.
Look for a way that you can turn a hobby or a skill set you have into a business. Make sure you look at the startup cost before you dive in. You want something that is going to have little or no startup costs. Having to come up with a large amount of money will be of no benefit when it comes to reducing your debt. Mowing yards, baby sitting, doing laundry or ironing for others, walking dogs are just a few things that require little or no investment and can bring you the extra money you need to be out of debt that much more quickly.
