Most people that are overwhelmed with debt, don’t know where to start. Credit counseling has become quite popular these days and it is not a bad option, but with discipline you can get out of debt on your own.

With a name like “You’re Broke Because You Want to Be,” don’t expect to find an easy road. Larry Winget’s plan for getting out of debt is aggressive. He starts about getting you to look at the reasons you spend money you don’t have. This book also has a short exercise on setting small goals for the way you live your life. After all, debt is many times the outward symptom of something else that is going on in your life.

Now it is time to get down to work and list every penny you owe. Even the $20 your owe your brother. It is time to cut up your credit cards and keep a journal to find out where your money is really going. Start making on-time payments and talk to your creditors. You will be surprised how many of them are willing to work with you once you stop running from them.

This book contains a worksheet for developing a budget. Larry advises you to be ruthless. Your expenses have to be less than your income. Period. There is no way for you to cover your expenses if your income is less than your expenses. We consider many things necessities today, that people did without 30 or 40 years ago, such as; cable, internet service and cell phone service.

I totally agree that even the most severe debt elimination can be done by the consumer. It does definitely take a mindset change and a habit change to stay away from credit cards. Thanks for this information - consumers awareness needs to be raised even more.
